Get ‘N’ or Get Out!

Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was an instant success. While it did have to catch up with Sega, and Sony the N64 certainly did not have any issue selling consoles; the initial shipment of 500,000 consoles sold out within its first four months of release.

Unlike most consoles, the Nintendo 64 had a very small launch line-up, consisting of only two titles;

Super Mario 64

Pilotwings 64

Following in the tradition of the Nintendo, Mario and his new pal Yoshi, starred in a multitude of N64 games; Mario Kart 64, Mario Party and its two sequels (Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3) introduced, for better or worse, a generation to casual gaming. The spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, was one of the last games to be released for the system. It too would go on to be a raging success spawning an entire series of Paper Mario video games.

Yoshi even got his own adventure, starring in Yoshi’s Story.

First demoed in 1995, fans would have to wait another three years before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released. Zelda was met with universal acclaim as soon as it was released and many still consider it the best game of all time. In 2000 Nintendo surprised fans by announcing a follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

And who can forget Super Smash Bros?

In addition to the aforementioned titles, many other developers other than Nintendo released console exclusive titles for the N64, but the one that everyone remembers is Rare. In 1994 Nintendo bought a 49% stake in the company and from then until 2001, Rare released some of the best games for the Nintendo 64;

Golden-Eye 007

Banjo Kazooie

Banjo Tooie

Diddy Kong Racing

Donkey Kong 64

Perfect Dark

The Nintendo 64 would eventually go on to sell close to 33 million units worldwide, finally ending production in 2003 almost two years after the last first party game, Mario Party 3, was released.
